Meeting the needs of children with disabilities in an environment where “learning knows no boundaries.”

We aim to achieve our purpose by:

- Developing intellectually rigorous curriculum and teaching strategies that value and build on the diverse needs and strengths of individuals.
Forest Lake Special Education Program (SEP) is an integral part of the school campus and currently caters for about 80 children. The program is coded for the disabilities of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Intellectual Disability (ID) but can cater for a range of disabilities. The majority of students enrolled at this time have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
SEP staff support students with a disability in the school across all year levels in an inclusive model. Students can access varying degrees of integration depending on individual needs. In the regular classrooms they are supported by Case Managers (Special Education Teachers) and Special Education Teacher Aides.
Students access the regular curriculum - English, Mathematics, Science, The Arts, Health and Physical Education, and Technology. Programs such as cooking, and gardening are also offered (where appropriate) and teach students skills in real life contexts while incorporating aspects of the Key Learning Areas. All students with disabilities are able to have modified programs where necessary and are issued with a report on their academic performance at the end of each semester. Individual Support Plans (ISPs) are reviewed at the end of Term. Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) are reviewed twice a year.
Due to the high percentage of students with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder at the school many disability specific programs are offered. These programs help students to learn about themselves and teach them how to manage aspects of their disability which impact on their lives.
Parent InvolvementParent involvement is fostered and valued in:
- ISP and ILP meetings
- Education Adjustment Program (EAP) meetings
- Regular case conferencing (where necessary)
- Involvement in Forest Lake State School Committees
The SEP staff work with parents, therapists, specialist teachers, primary school staff and outside agencies to provide rich learning experiences and programs that are practical, worthwhile and meet the educational, emotional and behavioural needs of each child. We have a strong commitment to maintaining a supportive environment that enables each child to feel confident and happy at school.
Education Queensland Policy & Processes for Students with a Disability
Education Queensland caters for the following 6 areas of disability:
- Intellectual Impairment
- Visual Impairment
- Hearing Impairment
- Physical Impairment
- Speech Language Impairment
- Autism Spectrum Disorder
Each student with a disability needs to have a current Education Adjustment Profile (EAP) and an Individual Support Plan (ISP).
Education Adjustment Program (EAP)The EAP profile identifies the type and frequency of teaching adjustments that are made in a class/school program to help a child learn.
Individual Support Plan (ISP)
The ISP adds individuality to a program and provides prioritised educational goals which are specific to the child and their needs. It reflects current level of performance, current classroom adjustments (EAP), current goals and learning priorities. These 2-3 goals are linked to the EAP and are reviewed at the end of Term.
