Starting school is an exciting milestone for children and their families. At Forest Lake State School, we aim to make the transition to Prep a positive, familiar and welcoming experience.
Our pre-Prep opportunities give children and families time to become familiar with the school environment, meet other children and families, build confidence and begin preparing for the routines of school.
FLSS Playgroup
Our FLSS Playgroup welcomes children aged 0 to 5 years and their parents or carers.
Playgroup is held:

9:00am–10:30am
FLSS Library
Families are encouraged to bring a hat, water bottle and morning tea.
Playgroup provides a relaxed opportunity for young children and their families to spend time within the Forest Lake State School community before beginning school.
Through play, stories, creative activities and time with other children, families can begin building positive connections with our school community.
Soaring into School – Little Frankies
For children preparing to begin Prep, Forest Lake State School offers Soaring into School – Little Frankies, our 12-week transition-to-school program.
The program is designed to help children feel confident, comfortable and excited about starting school.
The program includes:
- 12 transition visits
- opportunities to meet their teacher
- experiences within a Prep classroom
- opportunities to meet new classmates
- 12 parent workshops to support families as their child prepares for school
During the transition visits, our Little Frankies begin becoming familiar with the people, places and routines that will be part of their Prep experience.
Parent workshops run alongside the children's transition sessions, providing families with information and practical strategies to help support a successful start to school.
For the 2026 transition program, Little Frankies sessions run from 8:50am–9:30am, with parent workshops commencing at 8:55am in the PAC. Please refer to the current Little Frankies calendar for session dates.
Preparing for Prep Together
Families play an important role in helping children feel ready for school. In the months before Prep, families can support their child by:
- sharing books together
- talking positively about starting school and making new friends
- encouraging children to ask questions about school
- practising morning routines such as getting dressed and eating breakfast
- practising opening lunchboxes and food containers independently
- encouraging children to carry and look after their own belongings
- helping children become confident with toileting, dressing and putting on their shoes
- providing opportunities to play, talk and interact with other children.
These everyday experiences can help build the independence, confidence and positive approach to learning that support a successful start to Prep.
Prep Enrolments
Prep enrolments for 2027 are now open.
Children born between 1 July 2021 and 30 June 2022 are eligible to enrol in Prep for 2027.
Families interested in enrolling at Forest Lake State School can complete an enrolment enquiry through our website.
Once enrolled, families will receive further information about participating in our Soaring into School – Little Frankies transition program.
