Our school is committed to acknowledging and executing its fundamental role in the development of the gifts of students. Gifted students are those who excel, or have the potential to excel, in general or specific ability areas.
At Forest Lake State School, opportunities are available for extension, enrichment and acceleration, or the appropriate combination of these, as deemed appropriate. Acceleration can involve speeding the student's passage through school by curriculum acceleration within a year level, curriculum compression, vertical timetabling or grade skipping. Enrichment and extension involve concentration of high-level skills development, creative and critical thinking. Factors such as the extent and nature of the special ability, student's self-concept, extent of experiences, any disabilities and personality traits will influence directions for all students. Parents who believe their child is gifted should contact the classroom teacher to seek information about identification processes.
The school provisions for gifted and talented students include the following:
•A well-defined process for identification, which may be initiated by parents or teachers.
•A curriculum that is responsive to the diversity of the needs and interests of the gifted students through the teaching of higher level order skills which challenge and motivate students.
